MA student from J&K wins Irom scholarship

The first Irom Sharmila Scholarship has been awarded to Iymon Majeed (22),a resident of Panjipora village in Sopore,J&K. An MA (political science) student at Jamia Millia Islamia,he has been writing about his experiences in his home state for various publications. He was born in March 1991,nine months after the state came under AFSPA in July 1990.

The jury selected him over 50 applicants,mostly students who had lived in conflict zone. The scholarship includes one-time cash award of Rs 50,000,and is open only for post-graduate students enrolled in any university or institute in Delhi who have suffered under AFSPA or similar laws and have contributed to the democratic struggle against militarism in the spirit of Irom Sharmila.

The jury consisted of A Bimol Akoijam of JNU,Kamei Aphun,Ujjwal Kumar Singh and Nandini Sundar of DU,and Sameer Yasir of Islamic University of Science and Technology,Kashmir.
