Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had personally managed almost every aspect of his recent visit to Japan,a country that is known to be close to his heart. Few people know that the Prime Minister has a long association with Japan and its people. In the 1990s,Singh used to be part of a bilateral group working for the strengthening of relationship between the two countries. He is also known to be a great admirer of the Japanese work ethic.

FORMER Law Minister Ashwani Kumar,who was forced to resign after having been caught interfering in CBI’s status report in the coal block allocation scam,is back in court. A designated senior advocate,the Rajya Sabha MP was recently seen in the Supreme Court in full court dress,lawyer’s gown,et al,waiting his turn to argue a case.

Power Centre

GUESTS at a function to mark the second anniversary of the National Rural Livelihood Mission were pleasantly surprised to suddenly find Sonia Gandhi amongst them. The Congress president was the chief guest at the function. After her speech,and customary photo-ops,she was walking towards the exit when she had a change of mind and decided to mingle with the guests. She greeted the people present and shook their hands,as the surprised crowd clamoured to make the best use of the opportunity and get their pictures clicked with the most powerful politician of the country.

Goa Gone

EVEN with the monsoon approaching,the tourist paradise of Goa does not appear to be enticing enough for some BJP leaders. The party is holding its national executive at Goa over the coming weekend,and at least two prominent leaders would be absent. Party’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad,and its youngest general secretary Varun Gandhi are both giving it a miss. Varun,who has been stressed out because of the death of his newly first-born child,had planned a vacation for himself,the dates of which have now coincided with the party conclave. He is learnt to have sought permission for leave from party president Rajnath Singh and elder leader L K Advani from what would have been his first executive meet as general secretary. Prasad,on the other hand,is scheduled to be in Sri Lanka on those dates,leading a delegation for a track-II dialogue with a think-tank in the island country. He is learnt to have submitted in advance the draft of one of the party’s resolutions that he was assigned to prepare.
