When West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was being heckled by SFI activists at the Planning Commission building Tuesday, security personnel pleaded with her to take the VIP gate,an offer she had rejected earlier. When pressed further,Mamata retorted that she was not a VIP but a LIP. The security personnel backed out after that, unwilling to take the risk of annoying the mercurial leader any further, but they were left wondering as to what LIP meant. They settled for a meaning that seemed best suited in that context — Less Important Person.

RAISING QUESTIONS

URBAN Development Minister Kamal Nath asked a delegation of British town planners as to how high-rises existed in harmony with heritage structures in London. In Delhi,Nath told them,it was difficult to build anything new within a few kilometres of Parliament House or Raisina Hill. The delegation explained the London plan in detail, but Nath was not quite sure how it could be replicated in Delhi. Incidentally,Nath has been batting for more high-rises in Delhi, though after creation of adequate infrastructure.

CURIOUS CASE

THE appointment of Rupinder Khosla by Law Minister Ashwani Kumar as the assistant solicitor general for the Punjab and Haryana Court has surprised many. Khosla is known to be close to Akali Dal,having served as an additional advocate general in the Akali Dal-BJP government of Punjab. Not only that,Khosla has been appointed by creating a new post. So far, there was only one assistant solicitor general for the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Now there will be two. What is more,Khosla is senior to the serving assistant solicitor general and therefore will be the first among equals. In keeping with that status,he has been given the power of marking cases and distributing other work. Recently,he was in news for getting into an altercation with a Chandigarh policeman on duty in the High Court. The incident resulted in a case being registered against him.

SURPRISE INVITATION

CULTURE Secretary Sangeeta Gairola is said to be upset. Her ministry received word from Rashtrapati Bhawan that the President had agreed to grace a function in West Bengal to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The President’s office sought details of the arrangements being made for his visit. Since it had not invited him,the ministry was caught by surprise. It turned out that Gairola’s predecessor,Jawhar Sircar, now Prasar Bharati CEO,had requested Pranab Mukherjee to attend the function and he had agreed. The ministry is clearly not impressed with such ‘interference’.

TAILPIECE

AT his camps,Baba Ramdev is not just the boss,he is also the sole star. But with his political ambitions having fizzled out, there might be a sense of insecurity creeping in. At his ongoing shivir in Shirdi, cine star and former MP Hema Malini made a guest appearance on Wednesday.
