Pranab Mukherjee was ostensibly on the campaign trail when he arrived in Ranchi on Thursday evening, but by the time he left, there was a farewell party thrown for him.

The Presidential candidate referred to his anticipated victory when he said,“I am entering another phase of my life. This type of interaction would come to an end now. I will wish good health for you,not goodbye.” Then, after a pause,“…if I get elected.”

Mukherjee met Jhakhand Mukti Morcha’s Shibu Soren,All Jharkhand Students’ Union’s Sudesh Mahto and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha’s Babulal Marandi. The first two are rumoured to be leaning towards supporting Mukherjee. JVM reiterated its support that they had declared much earlier. When asked,Mukherjee said he was ‘hopeful’ of their support.

“(Earlier) I had an identity… now,I neither represent the Congress nor am I a minister,” he said, flanked by Lalu Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan, leaders in these parts before the creation of Jharkhand. Lalu joined in bidding him farewell: “We will bring him to Jharkhand and Bihar first (after taking oath as the President).”

Paswan, too, said that this would be his ‘last such meeting’ with Mukherjee before the election.
