Former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday claimed that defence deal makers tried to influence his father H D Deve Gowda when he was the prime minister.

“The middleman had approached me and my father with an offer of bribe to strike a defence deal. This when my father was prime minister in 1996,” he said here on Thursday, while implying that he and Deve Gowda did not succumb to the offers.

Kumaraswamy said recent revelations — the Army Chief’s allegations of being offered a Rs 14 crore bribe — had prompted him to revisit the experience.

Hours later,Kumaraswamy, however, attempted to shield his father, saying Gowda did not have any information about middlemen having approached him with a bribe to strike a defence deal. “Some middlemen had approached me to offer bribe but Deve Gowda doesn’t know it… he is not the person in this issue.”

Kumaraswamy said since the offer came to him around 16 years ago,he could not recollect which was the defence deal the middlemen wanted to strike.

Deve Gowda said his son never approached him with any recommendation of middlemen to strike a defence deal. “I am not aware of any offer made to me,” he added. — With PTI
