The Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court on Saturday sent BJP MLA and former minister for women and child development Maya Kodnani and former VHP general secretary Jaydeep Patel to four days in police remand. The two have been arrested in connection with the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre in which 11 persons were killed.
Officials of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) produced the two leaders under tight security before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate N A Ijner. A large number of supporters of the two leaders also gathered in the court premises. As soon as SIT officials reached the court, the supporters of Kodnani and Patel began shouting Jai Shri Ram. They remained in the court till the time the two were taken away by the officials. While advocate Mitesh Amin appeared on behalf of Kodnani,Vijay Patel appeared for Patel.
Kodnani resigned from her post on Friday after the Gujarat High Court struck down her anticipatory bail granted by a lower court.
In their remand applications of the two leaders, the SIT sought their custodial interrogation to find out, among other things, the source of the inflammable material and weapons they were allegedly seen providing to rioters. The SIT also wants to investigate if the massacre was a pre-planned conspiracy and whether other political leaders were also involved in it. It also wants to recover the material that was looted from shops and residences of Muslim residents in Naroda Gam.
While Kodnani is accused in both Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam massacres,Patel is accused in the Naroda Gam case.
