Through its new minister for temple endowments, the BJP government in Karnataka Friday said it will spend Rs 18.5 crore across 37,000 temples in the state to propitiate the rain gods.

Kota Srinivasa Poojari, whose surprising ascent to the ministry of Jagadish Shettar had caused heartburn among some BJP legislators, told the legislative council about this plan to fight drought conditions in 123 taluks in the state.

Each temple would get Rs 5,000 for puja to be held on July 27 and August 2,he said.

Criticising the move, the Opposition said the expenditure should be directed towards drought relief.

Earlier, the first muzrai minister in the BJP’s tenure,Krishnaiah Setty, had asked temples to offer puja for longevity of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.
