Be it induction of V S Achuthanandan into the politburo or continuance of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in the top decision making bodies,CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Thursday refused to quell speculation around the fate of the two former chief ministers. “Wait for three days. All the speculation will be put to rest,” he said.

The election of the new leadership for three years is done on the last day of the party congress. Apart from VS,there is also considerable interest on Buddhadeb, who has not been attending politburo and central committee meetings and has stayed away from party congress citing ill health.

Karat, however, gave indications that Buddhadeb may stay, but many feel he should be made a special invitee. He quoted almost verbatim from a letter Buddhadeb had written to him ahead of the party congress. He said the former CM has not asked the party to relieve him from the politburo and central committee.

“He a sent a letter …explaining his inability to attend the party congress because of his continuing health problem. He is not in a position to undertake such a long travel from Kolkata to Kozhikode…He deeply regretted his inability to attend and asked he be excused for his absence. The letter has been placed before the central committee and it has given him leave of absence,” Karat said.
