The political tango between Mulayam Singh and Kalyan Singh reached its climax on Wednesday, with Mulayam inducting his new-found ally’s son Rajvir Singh as SP general secretary and Kalyan Singh announcing that he would campaign for the SP in the Lok Sabha elections.

Rajvir Singh’s induction came an hour after Mulayam Singh drove to Kalyan Singh’s residence on Wednesday morning, accompanied by SP general secretary Amar Singh who,the SP chief said, had played an important role in the coming together of the two leaders.

While the alliance provides Kalyan Singh a platform to launch his son,the SP can count on the votes of Kalyan Singh’s Lodh community. The most immediate result, however, may be a few extra votes for the SP in the Legislative Council elections on Thursday. Rajvir Singh’s wife,Premlata Devi,is a BJP MLA. Another BJP MLA,Sunder Singh said he and three others would follow Kalyan Singh’s directions.

Mulayam Singh said,“With Rajvir Singh joining the Samajwadi Party, the people of the state have got a real political alternative they had been waiting for long. We will work for the poor,SC,OBCs and disadvantaged sections .”

Kalyan Singh,on the other hand, emphasised his commitment to the SP. “Let there be no doubt that I am with the Samajwadi Party and wherever and whenever they need me I shall be available and I will extensively campaign for the SP during the next Lok Sabha polls,” he said.

Amar Singh said that with the coming together of the two leaders,“the real face of Bahujan Samaj” had emerged in UP and their mission was “to finish the BJP in UP”. Kalyan Singh would remain independent and it was for him to choose a constituency for himself though he was most likely to contest from Etah,he said.

Both sides made suitable noises to dispel the impression that it was an opportunistic tie-up. While Mulayam Singh harped on his ties with Kalyan Singh in the 1977 Janata Party government,Amar Singh called it “an alliance of hearts”. Claiming that Mulayam “loved him like a son”,Rajvir Singh said his induction in the SP was like joining a family.
