Accusing the Congress-led UPA of anti-Dalit mentality,Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday asked the Centre to drop the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Reservation in Posts and Services) Bill,2008,which is to be tabled before the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

She said once the Bill — which has been passed by the Rajya Sabha — gets a green signal in the Lower House and becomes a legislation,it would stop SC/ST people from getting quota for posts in 47 higher educational institutions, which they had been enjoying so far. These institutions include IITs and IIMs.

Describing the government move as “against the Constitution”,Mayawati said she has faxed letters in this regard to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterji and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Besides, she has appealed to the Opposition parties to get united to oppose the Bill.

“If the UPA goes ahead with the Bill, the Congress will have to face its consequences in the Lok Sabha elections,” she said.
