A city court has rejected the application for release filed by businessman Abhishek Verma and his wife Anca Maria over a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and extended their judicial custody till October 1.

The couple is currently in the custody of the CBI in a different case lodged under the Official Secrets Act. As a result to the CBI custody, the ED had been unable to produce them before court on September 10,which was the date of expiry of the judicial custody granted to the ED.

The couple had filed the applications before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gautam Manan pleading that since the ED had not taken any steps to produce them before the court from CBI custody on expiry of their judicial custody remand, the “continuity of custody” had been broken.

The application stated that they were “not in custody” in this case and granting fresh custody would be “tantamount to a fresh arrest” and will lead to “severe agony and injustice” to them. The court, however, rejected the plea and extended their custody period.
