The 11-day-old baby girl who remained unclaimed in a Jodhpur hospital while two couples fought over a boy has found her parents.
Results of DNA tests that came in Thursday confirmed that Poonam Kanwar and Chain Singh, one of the warring couples, were her biological parents. The couple had refused to take her for the past 11 days, believing they had given birth to a boy,as the Umaid Hospital staff had erroneously told them.
Jodhpur police handed over the DNA test results to Jodhpur Chief Judicial Magistrate the Rajasthan High Court had on Monday taken suo moto cognisance of the dispute and ordered the magistrate to oversee the inquiry into it who then read out the report to Singh in presence of Umaid Hospital Superintendent Dr Narendra Chaggani. Kanwar and Singh then agreed to take their daughter.
Meanwhile, hospital authorities said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the staffers responsible for the mix-up.
The baby girl was born to Kanwar at around 11.25 pm on March 25. Less than an hour-and-a-half later at 12.45 am on March 25,a boy was born to Reshma Devi and Sagar Ram.
A ward staff mistakenly handed the boy to Kanwar after Devi was wheeled away from the same ward following post-delivery complications, hospital authorities said.
We realised the mistake a couple of hours later and tried to set things right, but Singh and Kanwar refused to believe the situation and insisted the boy was theirs. A committee was set up to probe the issue and blood group testing proved the boy was Devis and the girl Kanwars, said a senior doctor at the hospital.
Singh and Kanwar said they would accept the girl only after DNA tests, which the hospital authorities agreed to,the doctor added.
