With the Samjawadi Party and BJP promising an unemployment allowance in their election manifestos, registration of unemployed youths in the employment exchange offices in Uttar Pradesh has recorded a big surge in recent days.

In different districts, where 10 to 50 candidates were getting registered daily before the announcement of election manifestos, now 150 to 2,000 youths are lining up for registration every day. To manage the crowds, the authorities have opened additional counters for registration. In Allahabad, police have been deployed to control the crowds.

In its election manifesto released on January 20,the SP promised Rs 1,000 per month to unemployed youths if it is voted to power. A week later, the BJP released its manifesto which promised an unemployment allowance of Rs 2,000 per month.

After these announcements, the number of registrations at employment offices started rising, with Allahabad reporting a maximum of around 15,000 new registrations so far in the current month.

Allahabad Regional Employment Officer M K Singh said,“Before the release of the manifestos,50 to 100 youths were getting their names registered. But after the announcement of unemployment allowance,a minimum 2,000 youths are registering themselves every day.”

Singh said the administration,on their request, deployed a team of 16 policemen to control the crowds. Including the new registrations, the total number of unemployed youths in Allahabad is now 1.35 lakh. Till January 31,the total registration was 1.20 lakh.

“On-line registration was started about one month back but it had received negligible response. Seeing the crowds,I displayed a banner about the on-line facility last week and after that about 400 candidates applied for registration on-line,” Singh said.

Increase in registration has also been reported from other districts of Allahabad region, including Fatehpur,Kaushambi and Pratapgarh where 150 to 200 youths are getting registration every day.

In Faizabad district,600 to 1,000 youths are getting registered every day. Regional Employment Officer Ramashankar Bharti said 15 to 20 registrations were done daily before the SP and BJP came out with their manifestos. Around 7,000 youths have registered themselves in Faizabad in the last one month,he said.

In Lucknow district, the number of registrations before the manifestos was 10 to 20 a day. “But after these announcements,200 to 300 registration are being done here every day. The maximum in a day was 700 on February 17,” said P K Pundir,Regional Employment Officer.

Around 150 registrations are being done every day in neighbouring districts like Rae Bareli,Sitapur,Kheri and Hardoi.

The youths at the Lucknow employment exchange admitted they were getting registered only for allowances. “Expecting the SP to return to power,my father asked me to register my name here. Rs 1,000 would be sufficient for my mobile phone bills and purchasing application forms of competitive exams till I get a job,” said Mukul Rastogi, pursuing MSc at Lucknow University.
