An Army jawan, with his eyes gouged out,was found unconscious under mysterious circumstances in a nullah near Chowki Choran on the Jammu-Poonch highway near Akhnoor Wednesday morning.

Identified as Rakesh Dutt,he is a resident of Lam in Rajouri district. He was posted with 11 Rashtriya Rifles in Kishtwar. Married for three years,Rakesh has a two-year-old daughter. He had left for Kishtwar on March 31 to rejoin duty after a month-long leave, said his aunt Neelam Sharma.

The police personnel of Chowki Charan who admitted the jawan to the Government Medical College Hospital said they had received a call from a passerby about an injured Army jawan lying in a nullah.

The police have registered a case. However,no official update on the incident has come from the Army or the police till late evening.

In the absence of a statement from the victim, the police are working on various possibilities and did not rule out the militancy angle.

The police said Rakesh’s father,Kuldeep Ral,had said that the family is constructing a house at Lam but had ruled out any property dispute.

Referring to his incoherent conversation with the police team that rushed him to hospital, police said the jawan appeared to have been abducted by some people in a car.
