Activist murder: Had filed an RTI seeking to know from police identities of the dead and reasons behind their deaths

Besides taking on the mining mafia, slain RTI activist Amit Jethava had also sought to know from the police the reasons behind 20 suspicious deaths during 1991 to 2007 in Kodinar, the area where Bahadursinh Wadher, the constable arrested in connection with Jethava’s murder, was posted.

Responding to Jethava’s RTI application, the police department had said in all 20 cases, the deceased remained unidentified and in as many as eight cases, cause of death was not known.

Jethava had also been pressing for reopening of these murder cases in which he suspected political involvement.

Congress MLA from Kodinar Dhirsinh Bard said,“Through this application,Jethava had been trying to find the identities of deceased and the reasons why they were killed.”

As per the reply given by the police department to Jethava,in seven out of 20 cases, the reason for death was drowning. In one case, the body was found poisoned.

In two cases, the police said unidentified persons died due to diseases and in one case due to cold wave.

In eight other cases, the police have not specified cause of death.

Barad, who won Kodinar bypoll in 2009 after Dinu Solanki vacated the Assembly seat to become Junagadh MP,had in a letter written in 2004 to then Governor Naval Kishor Sharma demanded reopening of 11 of the 20 cases of death alleging direct involvement of Solanki.

Bhikhabhai,Jethava’s father, had also alleged Solanki’s involvement in his son’s murder.
