Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday sacked Minister for School Education,Sports and Youth Welfare Vaigai Chelvan from her council of ministers. Chelvan has been also removed from the post of secretary of the party’s youth wing.

Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan has been given the full charge of his ministry,a statement from the Raj Bhavan said. The minister was scheduled to attend a Teachers’ Day function at a private school in Chennai in the evening when the news of his removal came in.

The announcement came as a surprise to many as he was made the education minister less than six months ago. Those who predicted an imminent cabinet reshuffle did not even include his name in the list of the ministers set to be moved out of their current portfolio.

It is not yet clear the reasons behind AIADMK chief’s displeasure that led her to sack Chelvan.

A D Lit holder,Chelvan quickly rose in the party’s rank and file. A good orator,he was first made the secretary of the party’s literary wing and then the party’s youth wing secretary early last year. In October 2012,he was appointed the chief government whip before being promoted as minister in February this year.

Since coming to power in the state in May 2011,this was at least the eleventh cabinet reshuffle ordered by Jayalalithaa.
