An inmate serving life imprisonment in Tihar Prisons has sought bail from the Delhi High Court so that he can join the company that hired him in the campus placement drive conducted in the jail this January.
Sources said Guddu,an inmate lodged in jail number 3 of Tihar Prisons, was selected by a company here for a pay package of Rs 5 lakh per annum during the campus placement drive on Januray 27.
Sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping by a lower court,Guddu approached the high court for bail on the grounds that the joining date of the company that hired him was nearing, they said.
Campus placement drive was introduced after jail authorities realised that even after reforming prisoners and making them professionally qualified, they do not get jobs after being released due to their criminal background.
According to sources,Guddu held a post-graduate degree when he was imprisoned in Tihar Prisons.
He is a first time offender and during his stay in the jail he also enrolled in other educational courses to upgrade their qualification.
However, they contended that that the campus placement drive introduced as part of the rehabilitation programme for prisoners after their release cannot be held as a ground to release them.
The purpose for introducing a campus recruitment in the jail then may be questioned, they fear.
The next hearing in the matter is likely on April 14.
A brain child of a former jail superintendent M K Diwedi, this campus recruitment drive was introduced for the first time in February 25 last year.
Already 334 inmates have been selected and have received appointment letters from different companies who took part in the job interviews conducted four times here.
