Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) minister V K Ebrahim Kunju on Saturday said that the Kerala government is run by his party. IUML is the leading partner of the Congress in the ruling United Democratic Front.

Addressing a party function in Palakkad, the public works minister said that there is a campaign that IUML is ruling the state. “That is true that League is controlling the Government, though we have not admitted it publicly.”

“With the blessing of Allah, nothing will happen in Kerala without the knowledge of League. We are ruling the state. We are running the government. With the conviction that we are the managers of this government,we should develop a mindset to work for others,” he said.

After his comments triggered a sharp reaction from non-UDF parties,Kunju said that he was responding to criticism at the meeting that IUML was not getting enough space in government.

The IUML minister’s remark has come at a time when the ruling front is smarting under the criticism that the IUML has hijacked the government. A section in the Congress has come out against the recently-concluded investors meet held by the IUML-run Industries department without consulting the UDF.

While the IUML and the Congress backed Kunju,CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the minister’s comment reinforced the supremacy enjoyed by his party in the Congress government. Meanwhile, prominent Hindu leader Vellappally Natesan said the Chief Minister should make it clear who is ruling the state.
