The UP Police have swung into action after four of their alleged informers, who helped them track dreaded dacoits like Rajjan Gujjar,Nirbhay Gujjar and Ambika Patel alias Thokia, were gunned down in the past four months. A company of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) has been posted in four villages under the Attrauli police circle in Auraiya.

A gunner and rifle licence has also been granted to Ram Naresh Singh alias Lalla who had helped the UP STF in eliminating Nirbhay Gujjar, who was involved in several dacoities.

Though the police have refused to accept that the men who were killed were police informers, the clearance of Lalla’s licence application on a priority basis reflects the panic that has gripped the police.

Dacoits had attacked the house of Tilak Singh, the former gram pradhan of Guhani Kala village in Auraiya district killing him,his wife Sarojini Devi and neighbour Balbeer Singh Yadav on February 2. Dacoit Bhan Singh and his gang members, including Tehsildar Singh and Vinod Singh, are accused in the case.

Station officer of the Attrauli police station Krishna Nand said the dacoits suspected Tilak Singh of having passed on information about Rajjan Gujjar,Tehsildar Singh’s brother,to the police. Gujjar and his wife Lovely Pandey had been killed in an encounter on March 5 last year. Nand also confirmed that the PAC had been deployed in four villages — Guhani Kala,Guhani Khurud,Shigrohi and Jagpur — and security provided to Ram Naresh.

Auraiya SP Nachiketa Jha dismissed the claim that Tilak Singh was a police informer and said the murders were a fallout of personal enmity. “We have arrested two associates of Bhan Singh — Tehsildar Singh and Vinod Singh — and a hunt has been launched to trace Bhan Singh.”

Ram Naresh, however, said Tilak Singh had passed on information about Rajjan Gujjar to the then SP of Etawah while another informer Mahabir Gujjar, who was also murdered, had given information about Nirbhay Gujjar’s gang to the STF.

Meanwhile,Ramjee Pandey and his brother Ram Milan were in Lodhapurwa village in Chitrakoot allegedly by Deepak Patel, brother of dacoit Thokia who was killed by the STF last August.
