Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavans daughter Ankyitas wedding reception in Mumbai last week was quite a simple,low-key affair. While the wedding ceremony in Delhi was bound to be a high-profile event with whos who of the national capital attending it,an image-conscious Chavan chose a rather isolated venue at Colaba in Mumbai for the reception. Chavan had initially planned it at Mahalakshmi race course and even got it printed as venue on invitation cards. It dawned on him soon that he could court a controversy if the reception were to be held at a venue that has been in news over the issue of renewal of lease. The Shiv Sena that has demanded its conversion into a theme park was likely to pounce on the opportunity. Chavan was quick to tear all the invitation cards and got new ones printed with the changed venue.
Yoga guru Ramdev on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Courts ruling on gay sex in which one of his spokespersons was a petitioner. He invited brothers and sisters of the LGBT community to come to his Patanjali Yogpeeth offering them single rooms to get cured. He was, however, caught on the wrong foot when asked about the prevalence of the disease among holy men. Stumped for a minute,Ramdev said,I do not think I want to comment on that. He moved on to talk about why Arvind Kejriwal is shirking his constitutional obligation in not forming a government in Delhi with Congress support.
The first-ever visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan to India this month was a showcase of Indias diplomatic relations with the country and was given great importance by the government that went out of its way to publicise the event. It appears that the next big Japan visit will be in January when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected as the chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations. While no official announcement has been made,Abe is likely to attend the function on January 26. Incidentally, another important visitor from that region will also be in India a few days before South Korean President Park Geun-hye,the first-ever woman to be elected to the post. She is expected to visit India on January 15.
The exercise to find Vice-Chancellors to a dozen new Central Universities is proving to be more arduous than ever. To find the 12 V-Cs,the HRD Ministry has to first appoint 60 academics to search-cum-selection committees as new rules require a selection committee of five members each. The tougher part is getting these five to find time to come together for meetings to short list V-C candidates. The flurry of communications being exchanged to and fro between these 60 and the ministry has, however, forced the latter to go online and create a specific portal for coordination.
Talk about getting the timing right in a charged political atmosphere. The Special Protection Group was on its toes Tuesday night at a high-profile wedding function in the capital where BJPs Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi were to be present. The SPG ensured that their prime protectee does not find himself in an awkward face-to-face situation with Modi. So they ensured that Rahul entered the venue just as Modi left after a 15-minute stay.
