Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Saturday that Punjab could also get a moratorium on loan payment from the Centre if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee succeeds in her efforts.
If Mamata (Banerjee) gets a moratorium from the Centre,Punjab may also get the same because it along with Kerala is a debt-stressed state, he told a rural development conference here. Mamata ki safalta mein aapka bhi bhala hai, the Rural Development Minister said.
He was responding to CM Parkash Singh Badals query regarding Mamatas demand. Punjab has sought a moratorium on payment of Rs 22,000 crore for five years.
Ramesh also said he was of the view that if the state had to bear financial burden due to militancy,the Centre should help it. About a special package,he said Punjab had special status as it was a leading foodgrain producer.
Admits NREGA lag
Developed states have not been able to reap the benefits of NREGA,Ramesh said Saturday,adding that he had taken up with PM the issue of having separate schemes for developed and developing states in the 12th Five Year Plan. He said the nature NREGA work was mostly unskilled,and that states such as Bihar and UP have taken benefit of this.
