Honour killing suspected as man shoots dead daughter,her ‘lover’

In a case of suspected honour killing,Jaspal Singh,a resident of Chandpurana village near here,shot dead his daughter and her lover late on Wednesday night.

In a case of suspected honour killing,Jaspal Singh,a resident of Chandpurana village near here,shot dead his daughter and her lover late on Wednesday night. The deceased are Luvpreet Kaur (17) and Harjinder Singh (22),who was a neighbour . Police said Jaspal killed the two in a fit of rage after spotting them together in his house at night.

He also shot at Kulwinder Singh,Harjinder’s brother,who is undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,Ludhiana. The police are on the lookout for Jaspal,who fled after the incident. The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their respective families after postmortem.

Moga Senior Superintendent of Police,Snehdeep Sharma,said: “Family members of the girl have told us that Luvpreet had called Harjinder to her room at night when her father saw them. An angry Jaspal took out is gun and first shot his daughter and then Harjinder.” It is learnt that Kulwinder reached Jaspal’s house after Harjinder cried for help and was shot in the shoulder.

According to reports,while Harjinder was a Mazhabi Sikh,Luvpreet belonged to a Jat Sikh family.

The Moga Police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC,Sections 25,27,54 of the Arms Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,1989,at the Baghapurana police station. The police said Harjinder was earlier involved in a case of attempt to murder and was currently out on bail.
