Under attack over his alleged illegal assets,Health Minister Rajeev Bindal on Monday resigned after a high drama in the Assembly.

Bindal resigned after the Congress MLAs tried to disrupt the proceedings, staged a protest in the well of the House and raised slogans against Bindal, accusing him of corruption.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal later said Bindal’s resignation was a surprise to him and perhaps the minister was hurt due to repeated allegations. “I have not considered his resignation so far and will examine the facts. If there is something new in the charges,I will act accordingly,” he said.

Allegations were also levelled against Bindal before the 2007 polls but the BJP gave him a ticket. He won and was made a minister.

Bindal said he was being punished unheard, both by the Opposition and his own partymen. He claimed he had inherited the property he was accused of acquiring illegally and that he did not make additions to it after becoming an MLA and later minister.
