The latest letter from Team Anna sent to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday, repeating the charges it made against him previously, has a notable signature missing — that of Anna Hazare himself.

Sources in the India Against Corruption (IAC),the group spearheading the protests led by Hazare, said the social activist’s signature could not be obtained as he did not get the time to read the letter. “We sent it to him only this morning so he could not read it. There is nothing else in this,” said an IAC insider.

Hazare’s aide Suresh Pathare said his signature is missing because “Anna is not in Delhi”. Asked why Anna’s digital signature has not been used,as was the established IAC practice,he said: “There is nothing in this. They briefed Anna in detail before writing the letter. But Anna has not been able to read it because it is in English.”

While Hazare’s missing signature has set tongues wagging, especially in the light of increasing perception among even IAC volunteers that the movement is starting to look beyond Hazare — the indefinite fast in July will be undertaken by other core group members, albeit in Hazare’s presence — there are two new signatures added in the latest communication.

Kumar Vishwas and Chandramohan — both core committee members — have signed the letter. This is the first time in Team Anna’s prolific letter-writing history that people other than Arvind Kejriwal,Shanti Bhushan,Prashant Bhushan,Manish Sisodia,Kiran Bedi and Hazare have signed a letter.

The latest letter came five days after Mukherjee’s office sent a letter to them, rejecting their allegations against him as “unfair” and “self-seeking”.

It reiterates most of the charges made in the earlier missives and also quotes from a purported conversation between Rajya Sabha MP N K Singh and Niira Radia to implicate Mukherjee in a decision to grant retrospective tax concession to Reliance Industries.
