A private school in Ahmedabad denied admission to a five-year-old girl allegedly on the ground that she is a Muslim, the child’s mother complained to district education officials on Thursday.

Zaheera Momin,in her complaint filed with Ahmedabad District Education Officer M K Rawal, alleged that R H Kapadia New High School denied admission to her daughter for being a Muslim. The education authorities have ordered an inquiry and a probe team will visit the school on Friday.

Zaheera went to the school Wednesday after reading an advertisement, issued by the school authorities, offering mid-term admissions. “I even called up at the school to confirm details about the advertisement and admission in senior KG,” she said.

She said she met the school in-charge,who briefed her about the admission procedure and fee structure. “I was asked to bring my daughter along for admission on Thursday,” she said.

“At the time of buying the admission form, the school in-charge asked my daughter’s name. But when the in-charge asked her father’s name, surname and address,to enrol her name in the register, she suddenly stopped and bluntly told me that ‘the school does not admit Muslims’,” she said. In her complaint,Zaheera quoted the school in-charge as saying,“This is our school’s policy.”

Despite repeated attempts, the school authorities could not be reached for a comment.

When contacted, the Ahmedabad DEO said,“In case, the complaint stands correct, action will be taken against the school.”

A copy of the complaint has been sent to the Secretary of the education board.
