Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday blamed the TV reporter, who shot the July 9 molestation incident in Guwahati, for not informing the police, and also the police for its late response, before admitting that there were lapses on part of his Home department too.

“Didn’t the journalist have responsibility? Why didn’t he inform the police?” Gogoi said outside the Assembly on the first day of the five-day Monsoon Session.

Stating he was upset over the incident,Gogoi said: “It has also reflected on me because I am the Home Minister. I must admit there have been lapses on part of my department. That is why I have ordered a probe.”

The police, meanwhile, made the 8th arrest in the case. Rupkanta Deka was picked up from Nalbari district. Four accused, including main suspect Amar Jyoti Kalita, are still at large.

The incident rocked the Assembly Monday. The opposition Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) disrupted the Question Hour for over 10 minutes. Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi dismissed adjournment motions tabled by the Opposition parties, but assured that an hour-long discussion would be held in the next few days.

Raising the issue,AUDF member Sirajuddin Ajmal said: “The law and order has totally collapsed. A woman is molested for 45 minutes in the heart of Guwahati. A lady MLA is beaten up by a mob. Members of the Public Accounts Committee are assaulted. Are we waiting for the day when miscreants will attack this august House?”
