A convict in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case, who went absconding after being sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the attack on Sabarmati Express, was arrested from Ahmedabad on Tuesday by the police.

The convict,Shauqat Abdullah Ismail Badam,a resident of Polan Bazaar in Godhra town, was granted bail on December 13,2011. He was supposed to report to Vadodara Central Jail on December 20,2011. However,he never returned.

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) had received a tip-off that Shauqat (45) was going to board a bus from Gita Mandir bus stop.

During his interrogation after the arrest,Shauqat reportedly told the police he had sought bail for his daughter’s marriage. However, the marriage was cancelled due to some reasons after which he could not report back to the jail on account of family problems.

Police said Shauqat would be sent to the Vadodara Central Jail after interrogation.

Meanwhile, sources said Shauqat’s brother Bilal Abdullah Ismail Badam has also been absconding for the past two months. He too had sought and got an interim bail along with Shauqat to attend the marriage. However,he too fled after the function was cancelled. The DCB claimed they have located Bilal, who was in touch with Shauqat on the phone.
