It was Nidhis mother,Reeta Devi, who allegedly asked her family members to kill her daughter and boyfriend Dharmender for bringing a bad name to the family by eloping with a boy from the same caste and village. Reeta Devi reportedly admitted to this during questioning by the police after her arrest on Thursday. She was sent to judicial custody while the four others arrested in the case were remanded to police custody for five days.
Both Nidhi and Dharmender were brutally killed, allegedly by Nidhis family,in a case of honour killing in village Gharnavati in Kalanaur,Rohtak district of Haryana on Wednesday evening.
The police has arrested Nidhis father Narender aka Billu, mother Reeta Devi, uncle Ravinder, brother Sunny and one of their employees Mahesh on charges of killing the couple.
Giving details of the interrogation,a senior Rohtak district police officer said,Both are Jat families and staunch followers of same gotra and same caste norms as practised in the State. Since the girl and boy belonged to same gotra, according to their families they were not allowed to enter into any relationship other than that of brother and sister. They defied these customs and eloped on Tuesday. When Nidhis family got to know of this, they persuaded the couple to return to the village. When the couple returned, they were made to pay for their mistake. Nidhis mother was the first to assault her and the rest followed.
According to the villagers, both Nidhi and Dharmender were having an affair for the last five years.
Their families had entered into arguments several times before and even a month back Nidhis father had warned Dharmenders parents.
‘Horror’ not ‘honour’ killings: Selja
New Delhi: Against the backdrop of the killing of a couple in Haryana,Union Social Justice Minister Kumari Selja today said such acts cannot be justified and there was a need to strictly deal with people indulging in such horror killings. Taking life cannot be justified. There is a need for the government to be more strict, the minister said, noting such incidents have been reported from many other states. This is prevalent in many states but the present case has taken place in Haryana. It is a shocking incident and be it the government machinery or society, one must voice their opinion and act strictly against it, she said. In this case, even the family allegedly involved in the crime is pretending as if they have not done anything wrong, she said. The term honour killing is wrong. It is horror killing. It cannot be justified in any way. This incident should be like a mirror to society that this kind of act cannot be acknowledged in any way. We have to deal with such people very strictly, Selja said. PTI
