Retired Supreme Court judge and chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission Justice A K Ganguly Friday resigned from the post of guest lecturer of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS). A former student of the NUJS who had interned under Ganguly has made allegations of sexual harassment against him.
I have sent my resignation letter to the NUJS authority. Some members of the faculty were expressing their reservation about my continuation, Justice Ganguly said.
NUJS vice-chancellor P Iswara Bhat said the university had already dissociated itself from Justice Ganguly after a three-judge Supreme Court panel had indicted him of conduct of sexual nature towards the woman law intern.
On December 25,12 faculty members of NUJS had sent a letter to Bhat demanding that the institute dissociate itself from Ganguly.
In his resignation letter,Justice Ganguly wrote that he tried to the best of my ability to live up to the spirit of research and learning at NUJS and treated all the students with the utmost kindness they deserve.
Justice Gangulys resignation from NUJS comes a day after the Union Cabinet approved a proposal for sending a Presidential reference to the Supreme Court for a probe into the allegations of sexual harassment against him.
However, when asked whether he would also resign from the post of the chairman of the WBHRC,Ganguly said he would prefer to remain quiet.
