The Mangalore police have arrested four persons in connection with the Friday incident of assault on the daughter of a CPM MLA from Kerala and a Muslim boy she was talking to on a bus between Kasargod in Kerala and Mangalore.
The driver and the conductor of the bus from which Shruti (18) and her friend Shoaib were dragged before being held captive briefly and harassed are among those arrested,Director General of Police in Karnataka Ajai Kumar Singh said on Saturday.
Two of the arrested are from Kerala and two from Mangalore, the police said.
Those arrested from Mangalore have been identified as Raja alias Rajesh and Ranjeeb. The staff on the bus,Arvind Das and Sathish, both from Kerala, are believed to have passed on the information to their Mangalore associates about the Hindu girl and Muslim boy talking to each other.
Though the attack is believed to be the handiwork of Hindu right wing groups, the police did not identify any link between the arrested persons and any specific organisation. They dont carry any identity cards or anything. It is a matter of investigation, the Karnataka Police chief said. The MLA has accused right wing outfit Sri Rama Sene, associated with a recent attack on women in a Mangalore pub of being involved in the attack.
