Even as the overall flood scenario in Assam showed slight improvement with the water level falling in most of the rivers, the death toll has risen to eight following the death of one person in Barpeta district on Tuesday.

Four persons — three women and a minor girl — died due to drowning in the same district on Monday.

“The water level is slowly receding in most of the rivers in the district, but the floods have caused extensive damage to the road infrastructure. A large number of private fisheries have also incurred massive loss due to submergence and washing away of fish and fingerlings,” Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta,Siddharth Singh said.

Over 2.45 lakh people have been affected by the current floods in 14 districts across Assam in the past few days, with the authorities shifting over 32,000 people to relief camps.
