The Samajwadi Party Thursday removed Kamal Faruqui from the post of the party’s national secretary. Faruqui’s statements over the arrest of alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Yasin Bhatkal had kicked up a controversy.

SP national general secretary Ramgopal Yadav informed Faruqui about the decision through email. Confirming he received the email,Faruqui said no reason has been attributed to the action against him. “I will definitely meet Mulayam Singh Yadav and ask him about the reason. They have not mentioned my statements as reported in the media,” Faruqui said.

Faruqui had in a TV programme on August 30 asked whether Yasin Bhatkal had been arrested on the grounds of crime or religion. “If he is a terrorist, then he should not be spared but if he has been arrested just because he is a Muslim, then caution should be exercised as we don’t want to send a wrong message to an entire community that we are trying to malign the community’s image without a thorough investigation,” Faruqui had reportedly stated.

Opposition parties, mainly the BJP,decried his statements. Ramgopal Yadav distanced himself from Faruqui’s statements terming them his personal views.
