Twelve days after a woman’s body was found in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, two eyewitnesses have claimed that an accidental fall from a moving tempo led to her death. The death had led to protests after allegations that the victim was gangraped and killed.

“Two elderly people told the police that they were traveling in the same tempo the woman had boarded at Kulabali. They said the woman fell off the moving tempo 200 metres before Boginadi police station,” a senior police officer in Lakhimpur said.

According to the eyewitnesses, the tempo stopped after the victim fell down and they found her lying unconscious. But the driver insisted they leave to avoid any trouble with the police.

The two also identified the tempo driver and the handyman, who are now in custody. “The driver denies that the woman fell from his tempo, but we know that he had narrated the incident to the tempo owner,” the officer said.
