With Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa asking the Centre to declare the Ram Setu — through which the proposed alignment of the Sethusamudram channel is planned — a national monument, the DMK on Thursday mounted pressure on the UPA government to reject such demands and asked it to ensure that the progress of the project is not hampered. It also wanted the government to expedite the judicial process.

Top DMK leaders led by T R Baalu met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and conveyed to her that “any stand taken by the Government of India in abandoning the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project will run against the wishes of the people of Tamil Nadu”. The DMK leaders also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, asserting that the completion of the project would go a long way in furthering the economic development of India’s Southern Peninsular region.
