Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar Thursday said Naxalism was a wrong ideology that cannot be tackled by treating it only as a law and order problem. Blaming Mao-ists of misleading tribals,he said Naxalism can be weeded out only if tribals are made part of Indias growth story.
Pawar said the strategy based on primacy for security action may not yield desired results and that steps must be taken to protect the interests of all sections of society. Both should go hand in hand. Steps should be taken to root out poverty, unemployment, build roads, medical and educational facilities and provide right to work, he said.
Pawars comments come a day after his Cabinet colleague Jairam Ramesh called Maoists terrorists and slammed intellectuals for romanticising Maoists. He was addressing a national convention of NCPs youth wing.
Pawar said Naxalism was a wrong ideology that encourages people to take up arms. But for rooting it out,one will also have to look into the reasons for its growth, he said.
