DySP,policemen ‘run amok’,beat up Mughal Road workers

The Jammu & Kashmir Police are looking for one of its own officers and four others who allegedly got drunk and ran amok on Wednesday beating up workers of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) working on the Mughal Road,at various places between Shopian in the Valley to Poonch in Jammu region. Work on the prestigious project was suspended for a few hours as a result.

Senior Superintendent of Police,Poonch,Manmohan Singh said that the officer,Deputy Superintendent of Police Aftab Sheikh,who hails from Surankote and is posted in the Valley,was deployed on Amarnath Yatra duty in Pahalgam.

One of the HCC supervisors allegedly beaten up by the policemen near Buffliaz,Abdul Aziz,is hospitalised in Surankote with multiple fractures in his hand and shoulders,and reportedly has rifle butt marks all over his body.

Allegedly,without informing his superiors in the Valley ,Sheikh and four other officials left for Poonch via the Mughal road in his official gypsy on Wednesday,though the road is yet to be opened for public. They reached Dubjan around 3 pm,allegedly drunk,and started thrashing a JBC operator.

A few kilometres down,at Jajjinar,they allegedly beat up some engineers who may have objected to them using a road yet to be opened for vehicular traffic. Around 9 pm,at Behramgala,they are said to have beaten up Ajay Kumar,an excavator operator engaged by Star Construction Company. When some workers tried to intervene,the policemen reportedly fired two rounds in the air and moved towards Buffliaz.

Enroute,they allegedly thrashed HCC supervisor Abdul Aziz and fired three rounds in the air.

Poonch Deputy Commisisoner Kuldeep Khajuria said a complaint had been lodged by Executive Engineer of the Mughal Road Division,Bufliaz,Kabir Shah,and he has asked the SSP to arrest the DySP.
