On a visit to Delhi, primarily to meet A Raja,DMK chief M Karunanidhis son M K Stalin and senior party colleague T R Baalu on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Sources said the forthcoming presidential election came up for discussion during their meeting with the UPA chairperson.
While both the leaders termed their meetings with Singh and Gandhi as courtesy calls, sources in the DMK said that the selection of candidate for presidential election came up for discussion given the fact that another UPA constituent Mamata Banerjee has added a new dimension to the contest by naming Speaker Meira Kumar as her personal favourite for the top job.
Sources said the DMK leaders during their meetings reiterated Karunanidhis earlier assurance to the Congress that the party has no objection to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjees candidature. This assumes significance as Banerjee, while naming Kumar, appeared not keen on Mukherjees name.
Significantly, the two leaders met Mukherjee with whom Karunanidhi had said that his partys relationship went back several years.
Stalin said whatever Karunanidhi had conveyed to Defence Minister A K Antony is the DMKs stand on the issue.
Karunanidhi, sources in the DMK said, had told Antony when the two met in Chennai on May 5 that the party has no objection if Mukherjee is chosen as UPAs presidential candidate.
