Fissures between the ruling coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir surfaced at Zubin Mehta’s concert in Srinagar Saturday night. State Congress president and coordination committee chairman Saifuddin Soz had to sit in the 14th row as no chair had been reserved for him in the front rows. A miffed Soz let his displeasure known by “boycotting” the dinner hosted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah later.

TIGHT SCHEDULES

Amid intense speculation about the exact timing of the declaration of Narendra Modi as the BJP’s PM candidate, party chief Rajnath Singh is learnt to have asked general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal to check with every parliamentary board member about their availability in the capital. While Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar left Delhi soon after the RSS-BJP meeting on Monday,Nitin Gadkari left Delhi on Tuesday. Naidu and Gadkari are likely to be absent from the capital on Wednesday and Thursday and Rajnath himself is slated to be in Mumbai on Saturday. Modi and Advani will be addressing separate public rallies on Sunday. September 13 and September 16 appear to be the only two dates when most members are likely be present in Delhi ahead of Modi’s birthday on September 17. Party leaders who are not part of the decision-making process are, therefore, are zeroing in on these two days when the parliamentary board can meet and announce the decision.

CURBING POWERS

Director Generals of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles are up in arms against the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). They are protesting a recent directive by which the appointments of special DGs and Additional DGs have to be cleared by Home Secretary Anil Goswami. Earlier, the appointments were done by the DGs without any inteference from the MHA.

CHANGING TIMES

There has been a subtle change in the corridors of power in the Defence Ministry wing of the South Block, specifically outside A K Antony’s office. While a portrait of a Russia origin Su 30 MKI in action was earlier displayed prominently outside the Defence Minister’s office,it has now been replaced with a photograph of a US-bought C 130 J transporter landing at the Daulat Beg Oldie base along the China border. This has set the ministry abuzz whether the change reflects a larger transition.
