Annoyed over the denial of a ticket to contest the coming Assembly elections,Andhra Pradesh Minister for Small Scale Industries Gollapalli Surya Rao on Wednesday quit the Cabinet and also resigned from the Congress.

He faxed the resignation letter to Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, party sources said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister wrote a letter to Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari, requesting him to “sack” Surya Rao from the Cabinet “forthwith”. No reasons were reportedly given for this, sources in the Chief Minister’s Office said.

Legislator from Allavaram constituency in East Godavari district,Rao embarrassed the Government two months ago by alleging that his Cabinet colleague and Panchayati Raj Minister J C Diwakar Reddy swindled Rs 11 crore in sand auctions in East Godavari district.

Rao refused to withdraw his allegations and tender an apology to his colleague despite an intervention by the Chief Minister.

At that point,Reddy could not act against the minister as his Government was already under fire from Opposition parties over the “widespread corruption” in the administration.

Also,Rao was opposing the classification of Scheduled Castes in the state. Party sources said denial of ticket was a “punishment” for Rao following which he quit.
