A journalist for Pakistani channel Geo TV and The News daily,covering peace talks between Maulana Fazlullah,leader of the Swat Taliban,and Maulana Sufi Mohammad,Fazlullah’s father-in-law and the man with whom the government struck a deal two days ago,was shot dead in Matta,Swat,on Wednesday. The area is a stronghold of Fazlullah’s group.

Unidentified killers sprayed Musa Khan Khel,28,with bullets close to the spot where the clerics were to meet. He is the second journalist to be murdered by suspected Islamists in Swat in the last three months.

US ‘studying’ Pak deal with Taliban: Hillary

“I want to get the whole picture of what they (Pakistan) are attempting to achieve,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Tokyo. “I want to be sure we have a good understanding of Pakistan’s intention and the actual agreed-upon language (of the deal struck with the Taliban in Swat)…”

Surge begins: 17,000 US troops in Afghanistan

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that he would send 17,000 fresh US troops into Afghanistan over spring and summer,signalling the beginning of the surge he believes will turn the war around.The order adds nearly 50% to the 36,000-strong US contingent already in Afghanistan.
