ITBP constable P G Jomon’s last call to his family in Alappuzha,Kerala, from Uttarakhand was on Monday evening. The next day when news about the crash of an IAF helicopter flashed on the TV,Jomon’s friends dialed his number. There was no response.

Of the 20 feared dead in the crash,Jomon,26,was one. So far his death has not been communicated to the family. His father,Georgekutty, said Jomon had told them about the adverse weather and the daunting task of saving the stranded. “My next call would be delayed but don’t worry. Many people are yet to be air-lifted. We are fighting against the weather,” Jomon had told his father.

His uncle Vavachan said Jomon had last week said he was engaged in rescue at Kedarnath. Jomon joined the ITBP three years ago and has been posted in Chamoli since.

His job had eased the financial burden on his father,a mason. The family’s only asset is the 10 cents of land.
