The CPM central leadership has stepped in to tone down the criticism against Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan in the ongoing state conference of the party.

The report, presented by state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan after discussions in the state secretariat and the state committee, had come down heavily on Achuthanandan’s rebellious stand and decisions against the intentions of the party’s official faction in the last three years.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat,in his reply, objected to the reference of Achuthanandan as a “class traitor”. He pointed out that Achuthanandan was loved by a large section of people in Kerala and he should continue as the leader after imbibing the spirit of the criticism. The politburo would look into the issues raised against Achuthanandan during the discussions, said Karat.

Party sources said a major chunk of the discussions was dedicated for attacking Achuthanandan. On Wednesday,he complained to Karat about the personal attacks against him flouting the guidelines in the conduct of party conferences.

On Thursday,he went to the conference prepared to give his explanation on the charges, but the party declined the demand.
