The faction ridden CPI(M) has decided to rope in ailing Jyoti Basu to campaign for Amitava Nandi, the party candidate from Dum Dum. Nandi, the sitting MP,has been renominated despite objections from local workers, sources said.
Party sources said Nandis victory in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections was made possible by Basu who played a vital role in bringing together factions and groups divided between him and transport minister Subhas Chakraborty.
The infighting in Dum Dum is so bad now that a preliminary conducted by the party district committee reveals that a section of the party may work against Nandi, the sources said. In fact, the latest group clash at Durganagar railway station, which claimed the lives of two local leaders close to Nandi, has exposed the violent side of the infighting.
Following negative reports from the seat, the party state secretariat has decided that like 2004 Basu would again appeal for unity among party cadres in the constituency. The secretariat has decided that Basu, along with state secretary Biman Bose, will attend a meeting of party workers in Salt Lake to sort out things.
Nandi said at least 50,000 party workers from various parts of the district were likely to attend the March 16 meeting at Salt Lake stadium.
