A Court in Chennai issued non-bailable warrants against the editor and publisher of The Hindu in connection with the publication of a statement by DMK president M Karunanidhi that allegedly defamed Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Principal Sessions Judge G Chockalingam issued the NBWs as none represented the daily’s editor Siddharth Varadarajan and publisher Padmanabhan when the defamation case came up for hearing on Tuesday. The case has now been posted to July 18.

The complaint was filed by city public prosecutor M L Jegan,contending that the publication of Karunanidhi’s statement in connection with the ban on controversial Tamil film Vishwaroopam had defamed the chief minister.
