Congress MLA Vinayak Nimhan and his supporters assaulted and abused a security guard at The Indian Express-Loksatta office here on Sunday, leaving him with a swollen eye and bruised face.

The incident occurred at around 12 noon, when Nimhan,Shivaji Nagar MLA,accompanied by five of his supporters and a police constable, dropped in at the Express office. The guard,Manoj Prahlad Jadhav,30,an employee of The G4S Security Agency, asked them who they wanted to meet. Instead of giving an answer,Nimhan replied: “Who are you to ask me? Don’t you know who I am?”

Nimhan then punched Jadhav in the eye. His men beat up the guard for about 10 minutes, only leaving him after an Express staff member intervened.

“Nimhan punched me right in the eye and then slapped me on the face. His supporters joined in,they started beating me up and also verbally abused me. Nimhan slapped me twice and his men punched me several times,” said Jadhav.

When contacted,Nimhan said: “Such minor scuffles usually take place when our karyakartas are there. But if he was a private security guard, how are Express and Loksatta involved?”

The constable accompanying Nimhan later told Jadhav,“Why did you ask him directly? You should have asked me who he is.”

It later transpired that Nimhan was on his way to meet the Loksatta resident editor. Since he was not there, the MLA met Loksatta deputy editor Arvind V Gokhale, but did not mention the incident with the guard.
