Three-time Congress MLA from Bahadurganj (Kisanganj district) Tausif Alam obviously does not believe in austerity — an oft repeated virtue upheld by the Congress leadership. Alam,32,who married the daughter of Kathamatha panchayat mukhiya Hazi Izhar Asafi on Saturday, invited more than 50,000 people for the lavish wedding dinner, one lakh people for the reception on Sunday, organised celebratory firing and even had a chopper arranged for the ‘bidai’ ceremony. On the guest list was Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who performed his ‘sehrabandi’ besides interacting for half-an hour with four Congress MLAs present.

While senior Congress leader and Kahalgaon MLA Sadanand Singh, who attended the wedding, refrained from making any comment, party’s media incharge Premchand Mishra criticised Alam. “Whether through Congress working committee or instructions from Congress president Sonia Gandhi,we are told not to organise lavish functions. Alam is young and spent lavishly on his marriage in over-enthusiasm,” Mishra said. Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashok Choudhary, who skipped the wedding, said: “Austerity in public life is important. It has been an old and stated stand of the party, and everyone should adhere it”.

However,Alam countered: “I am an MLA and very popular among people. I cannot say no to anyone. Over one lakh people attended the reception. As for the chopper,I have not spent a penny on it; it was a gift from a friend.”

Meanwhile,Kisanganj SP Manoj Kumar has ordered a probe into the celebratory firing during the marriage. “We are studying the video footage of the marriage to take action,” he said.
