College mates kill student,injure friend in TN engineering college

The victims as well as the accused are from neighbouring Kerala.

AN ARGUMENT in college led to a brutal attack that left an engineering student dead,his friend in hospital and seven of their seniors behind bars for murder in Namakkal,Tamil Nadu. The victims as well as the accused are from neighbouring Kerala.

Deepak Padmanabhan,20,a second year student at Gnanamani Engineering College,got into a quarrel with some seniors who allegedly heckled him during lunch hour,according to a case filed at Rasipuram police station. The seniors pushed around and abused him,and his friend Dinesh when he tried to intervene. They went off when the bell rang for classes to resume but not before threatening the two friends that they won’t be spared. In the evening,when the friends were riding home,a group of seven seniors chased them in a car.

Deepak tried to outride them but the assailants caught up with their motorcycle and beat them up with iron rods. Deepak took a blow to his head that killed him instantly. Dinesh suffered injuries to his chest and stomach. He has been shifted to a hospital in Salem.

Deepak’s body was sent to his hometown Taliparamba in Kannur on Friday.

The accused,all third year students,have been arrested and charged with murder,attempt to murder,rioting and rioting with deadly weapons. They have been identified as Ashwinth,Davis K Cherian,Sebin Jones,John,Sarath,Lijo Joseph and Mithun Thomas.

Some students,meanwhile,accused the police of colluding with the management of the private engineering college but the police denied the allegation.
