The CPM believes that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s image has been “tarnished” due to the coal block allocation scandal and efforts to “cover it up”,but would not demand his resignation now and instead wait for the outcome of the CBI probe. The party on Monday demanded that Singh explain his role and that of his office in both the coal block allocation matter and 2G spectrum controversy.

The CPM — after its politburo and central committee meetings — concluded that Singh and the PMO cannot “escape responsibility” for the attempt to change the contents of the CBI’s status report. CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said the matter does not end with the resignation Ashwani Kumar.

In the 2G case,he said, documents which have come to the public domain show that the PM and PMO accepted and went along with the changes proposed by former Telecom minister A Raja.

“The PM has to come out and explain his role and that of his office in both the coal block allocation case and in the 2G spectrum matter,” Karat said.

Asked why the CPM is not demanding his resignation,Karat said the CBI inquiry is already on and the party would prefer to wait for its outcome.
