President Hugo Chávez has taken a sharp turn for the worse, nearly 12 weeks after undergoing cancer surgery,a government official said Monday.

“There is a worsening of the respiratory function related to the state of immunodepression corresponding to his clinical situation,” said Information Minister Ernesto Villegas in a 10 pm broadcast.

He added that Chávez was suffering from “a new and severe infection.” Officials previously said the president had overcome a lung infection, and it was not clear from the statement whether the new infection was also in the lungs.

Villegas said Chávez had been receiving “chemotherapy of strong impact” and characterized his condition as “very delicate.”
