The Congress on Sunday sought to put the BJP regime in Chhattisgarh in the dock over the killing of 19 alleged Maoists last Friday, saying that those killed were innocent tribals and the state government owes an explanation for this.

Citing the findings of a group of Congress MLAs who had visited Bijapur on Sunday, state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel said, villagers had gathered to hold a meeting concerning agricultural issues.

“Security forces surrounded them and started firing. There were no Naxals. Among those killed included at least five teenagers. One of those killed,Markham Suresh, was said to be the mastermind of Dantewada jailbreak case. But if you look at the police version immediately after the jail break, the mastermind was then identified as Sujit Marwee,” Patel told The Indian Express.

The PCC chief said AICC general secretary in charge of Chhattisgarh B K Hari Prasad was apprised of the findings of the Congress MLAs. Prasad was not available for comment.

“Central forces are under the state police. State police intelligence should have known whether they were Naxalites or not. Whose responsibility is law and order? Five children, among others, were killed by the police but it has been 70 hours and the Chief Minister has not said anything. You should ask the CM how and why this incident happened,” said Patel.

The Congress said a fact-finding team under state unit vice-president and tribal leader Kawasi Lakhma was formed. A convoy of 15 vehicles reached Bijapur on Saturday and spent the night at the circuit house. The leader of the delegation said,“There is rain but we will go to every home.” The convoy took less than 45 minutes for a “door-to-door survey” of the three villages.
